Will you pay for VR porn?

The pornography business isn’t doing too well because most people aren’t really paying for it. A huge amount of porn is available for free and it’s all over the internet. According to Anna Lee, a veteran in the pornography business, implementations of virtual reality can revive the business and make it profitable again.

HoloFilm Productions of Vancouver, British Columbia is a company that was started by Lee for this exact reason. It offers its viewers a special pair of VR goggles to view porn shot with 360 degree cameras. While using the goggles, the user feels like he is in the middle of the set where the content is being shot. Amidst the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, Anna Lee stated that “It’s the next progression of everything entertainment.”

As the future of virtual reality looks brighter than ever with big players like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Samsung, Sony and many others getting into the business with their own set of VR/AR headsets, the porn industry hopes to rebuild itself around it. As tweeted by famous pornstar and Charlie Sheen’s ex-fiancée Brett Rossi, “It’s so detailed that you can see a freckle on your ass.”

According to research firm IBIS World, potential of the porn industry’s growth per year is less than 1 percent. This trend will supposedly continue at least till the year 2020. Does it mean that men and women (men especially) have stopped watching porn? Not really! Surveys indicate that people are watching porn, but they are just not paying for it as much anymore because they are getting it for free. Piracy is the culprit here as it has been the culprit behind almost all forms of entertainment businesses taking major hits ever since it first reared its head.

Bryant Paul is a communications professor at Indiana University and he does not think that the porn industry will make too much profit with VR. According to him, the free videos available on the internet are so vast in number that it would be hard to make people pay for virtual reality based porn subscriptions. Daniel Abramovich, the owner of VRBangers is however convinced that the simple appeal of being there with the girl and the place where the action is going down is enough. Apparently, VRBangers is getting around 50 paid subscribers every day for $39.99 per subscription. What remains to be seen is what the consumers want, will they pay for VR porn will they stick to the heaps of free porn videos on the internet?
